FINDING SUPPORT

GET THE SUPPORT YOU NEED

It’s easier to cut back or quit if you have support, but it can be hard to know how to ask for help. You don’t have to go through it alone.

WHO TO ASK

You can ask more than one person for support. Pick someone you trust and that you know will listen without judgment.

  • • Talk to a close family member or friend that you know you can trust.
  • • Talk to your favorite teacher – the one who always listens.
  • • Ask your school counselor or nurse for information on resources that can help.
  • • Talk to your doctor. If you’re having a hard time stopping smoking or vaping, your doctor may be able to prescribe medications to make it easier.

WHAT TO SAY

If you’re not sure about how to ask for help, try writing a text, email, or letter. Sometimes writing down your thoughts and feelings is easier than talking about them in person. Here are some tips for what you might say:

  • • Share what you know about tobacco or vaping.
  • • Let them know what your goals are for cutting back or quitting tobacco.
  • • Ask if they will support you and let them know what type of support you need, such as someone to talk to when you’re having a craving or a bad day.
  • • Share the reasons you want to quit and how you are feeling about it.

My Life, My Quit™ coaches can help you get ready for these conversations and even practice what to say ahead of time. The more support you have, the better your chances are of meeting your goal.
